Miscarriages
Miscarriage is a pregnancy loss which takes place before 21- 22nd week of gestation (pregnancy), after that
period a pregnancy loss is medically qualified as a premature birth. Statistically, about one in five pregnancies ends in
miscarriage and it is difficult to identify the reason. It is believed that majority of miscarriages (about
60%) are a result of chromosomal abnormality of an embryo, which is a random error and it should not repeat in future. After
a miscarriage most women will have a successful pregnancy.
Main causes of miscarriage:
Genetic – due to some random genetic error the embryo stops developing properly at a very early stage
and cannot survive.
Hormonal – sometimes hormonal imbalance or lack of sufficient amount of certain hormones may lead to
miscarriage. It usually affects women who had hormonal problems prior to pregnancy.
Immunological – sometimes our immune system does not work properly and prevents the embryo from developing.
Women suffering from autoimmune disorders are at risks.
Anatomical – abnormally shaped uterus or a weak cervix can both result in a miscarriage. This usually
happens later on in pregnancy when the fetus is bigger.
Infectious – serious infections often accompanied by high temperature can be the cause of miscarriage.
